New Beats Ad Campaign

This is the original design. It is an advertisement of Beats by Dre headphones and was done by Alfredo and Alberto of alfredoandalberto.com. http://www.alfredoandalberto.com/the-game-starts-here
The designers showed contrast with the colors and also the sizing. The white and the red contrast very well as does the dark grey letter on the right side. They also showed contrast with the different sizing of the words. They showed repetition in the use of the two colors. With a red accent on the headphones they chose to use red to take up about two thirds of the left side and white for the rest. They used proximity on the left side with the words, logo and border. The three are close enough to where the viewer know that they are related but far enough away to where they know they are not the same. The border is used for alignment to help create a strong line to right-align the words and logo next to it.
The colors used are very contrasting. Like I mentioned above, the red color was taken from the logo on the side of the headphones and used on the entire left side of the ad. White was also used very much and the dark grey lettering on the right side contrasts well on the white as well. The color red is also one of passion, love and adventure,. This ad was for a rugby world cup so it got people excited for the upcoming matches.
The typography on the left is a decorative font. One similar to that of lettering on the back of a sports jersey, which fits perfectly. Also there are not many words so it is not difficult to read. The font on the right is a simple, sans-serif font. The words on the right are not as important so they did not need to stand out as much.
My new beats ad.
Similar to the original, my new design uses alignment with the border, text and logo to create a strong line. Mine is left aligned on the right side, the opposite of the original design. Contrast is used also in the color and text size. This way the words stand out. Repetition is used in the colors of white and blue. The same proximity found in the original is found here.
Here we can see that the headphones have a hint of blue in them which is how I decided to use the blue color. I stuck with the white color because the ads remain very similar. I also made the color of the text on the right a little darker so that it was easier to read.
The typography remained about the same. I stuck with a similar decorative font because I think it represents the ad well and I like how it reminds the user of a jersey. I used the same sans serif font for the name of the headphone. I think it should be able to be easily read like how it was in the original. It is a little easier here because the color is a bit darker.

Conclusion…

The original and the new ad work well together because the design remains basically the same but the layout is reversed and color changed from red to blue. This way the ads are still obviously from the same campaign but also obviously different. They also portray similar but different items and it is clear of that.

Vader Sucks

The original designers were Diego Mourao and Gustavo Dorietto from Escola Cuca in Sao Paulo, Brazil.  Here is the link https://pialeichter.squarespace.com/blog/2011/02/http66.html.  This ad was one among others done for a Lego Star Wars ad campaign.
Contrast – The biggest contrast to me is the colors that were chosen.  Darth Vader is obviously much darker than the background.  The viewers eyes are instantly drawn to his dark figure making him the focal point of the ad.  Also the words ‘Vader Sucks’ because of their dark color on top of the bright yellow.
Repetition –  The ad uses repetition with the storm troopers, the two white characters, to create a balance in the ad.  There is also a use of red in the light saber help in Darth Vader’s hand and in the Lego logo in the upper left hand corner.
Alignment – The only obvious alignment is the yellow wall.  Your eye begins on the dark figure and then naturally goes to the right.  The wall creates alignment which makes your eye automatically goes down and you look at the rest of the picture.  There is also some on the far left side with the Logo and some text on top aligned with the black cape of Darth Vader below it.  The storm troopers also are aligned at the feet.
Proximity – Proximity is shown by the white character that is closest to the wall.  If he were far from it we would not know he was spray painting it.  However, because he is so close and facing it we know that it was him.
Color – The yellow color is bright and warm.  It also shows that the storm troopers are care free and irresponsible.  On the other hand, Vader is a dark black showing his power and authority.

All of these things put together create harmony within the ad.  It is obvious what the ad is suggesting to anyone with some knowledge of Star Wars and is funny and inviting.  I think this ad did a great job in applying these principles.
